Dead Woman Walking!

When I turned into my designated parking space, I saw Cedric’s car parked in visitor’s parking right beside it. We both got out of our cars at the same time.

“I’m starting to think you’re forgetting things on purpose just so you can see me,” he said while holding my cell phone in his hand as he walked toward me.

“You had my cell phone?”

“You must’ve dropped it or it fell out of your purse while you were in my car.” He handed me the phone. “Nice selfies by the way,” he teased.

“You did not go through my phone, Cedric?” I asked furiously with crinkly brows raised. I used to text Milk lewd photos of my . . . you know what, and I would be mortified if he saw them despite the fact that he’d already seen me fully naked.

“Farryn, I’m just messing with you. Don’t you have a lock on your phone?” he asked while shaking his head.

“What? Why are you looking at me like that?” I wanted to know.

“It doesn’t matter,” he replied with his hands up and walked away.

“No, I really want to know!” I followed behind him over to his car.

“Okay, I’ll tell you,” he agreed while turning around. “You’re a much nicer person when you’ve been drinking!”

“Excuse me?” I placed my hand on my chest.

“I wish you could see your face right now and the look you have on it. As a matter of fact, look at the window,” he recommended.

I turned my head slightly and glanced at my reflection through the tinted window. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I stated firmly while turning away from the window.

“Well then you need to look again,” Cedric suggested, so I did. “There’s no life in your face and you have some of the saddest eyes I’ve ever seen on a woman. You don’t smile and your posture screams ‘don’t talk to me!’ Why, Farryn? Why are you so unhappy?” he asked candidly.

I pondered over Cedric’s questions as well as his statements as I continued to stare at my reflection in the tinted window—and he was right. There wasn’t any life in my face; only worry. There weren’t any smile creases around my mouth and my eyes were blank. I looked like a dead woman walking.

“Thank you for returning my phone,” I told him in a low tone and walked away before he saw the tears in my eyes.

“Farryn, wait!” He caught up with me and gently grabbed me by my arm.

“No, I’m fine . . . I’m okay.” I shooed his hand away and inserted my key in the door.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings.”

“You didn’t,” I told him without turning around to face him. The second I was about to step over the threshold it dawned on me that I had forgotten to call the exterminator, and now I was afraid to go inside my condo.

“What’s the matter? You see something?” Cedric asked while hovering over my shoulder. “You want me to go inside and check the traps for you?” he volunteered.
